I Finally Knew Where the Hell I Was Going

You're supposed to do this, you're supposed to do that.

That's what they said. So I put on my hat

And went out to do it, just like they said -

Followed directions, alpha to zed.

Lo and behold, it didn't work out.

The map they had given was wrong, north and south.

It worked fine for them - for the land they lived in -

But their lefts and their rights and their stern directions

Got me nothing but farther from my destination.

So I made a map based on my observations,

Wrote "You Are Here" and drew a place marker,

Gave names to new places I alone had discovered.

The more I ignored all the shoulds, big surprise:

I was much better served by my own pair of eyes.

I finally knew where the hell I was going.

And still to this day my map keeps on growing.
